Plumbing emergencies happen when you least expect them. Whether it’s a burst pipe flooding your basement or an overflowing toilet threatening to ruin your flooring, these situations can feel overwhelming. The key to minimizing damage and keeping your home safe lies in knowing what to do when disaster strikes. This step-by-step guide will help you handle a plumbing emergency confidently and effectively.

Step 1: Stay Calm and Assess the Situation

The first thing to remember during a plumbing emergency is to stay calm. Panicking will only make it harder to make clear decisions. Take a moment to assess the situation and identify the source of the issue. Is water gushing from a pipe? Is a toilet overflowing? Knowing what you’re dealing with will help you take the right steps.

Step 2: Shut Off the Water

Once you’ve identified the problem, your next priority is to stop the flow of water. For most plumbing emergencies, this means turning off the water supply. For localized issues like an overflowing toilet or leaking faucet, turn off the valve closest to the fixture. These are usually located under sinks or behind toilets. For more significant issues like burst pipes or major leaks, locate and turn off your home’s main water valve. This is often found in your basement, garage, or near the perimeter of your home.

Step 3: Address Immediate Safety Concerns

Plumbing emergencies can create hazards beyond water damage. Keep safety top of mind as you manage the situation. If water is near electrical outlets, appliances, or your circuit breaker, do not touch anything. Turn off electricity to the affected area if safe to do so. Wet floors can be slippery, so exercise caution when walking in flooded spaces. Use gloves and boots if you need to handle dirty water or wet materials.

           Step 4: Minimize Water Damage

Stopping the water flow is just the first step. You’ll also want to minimize the damage caused by standing water or ongoing leaks. Use towels or mops to soak up excess water. Place buckets, pots, or pans under leaks to catch dripping water. Move furniture, rugs, or valuables out of the affected area to prevent further damage. If you notice clogged drains or toilets, avoid using other fixtures in your home until the issue is resolved.

Step 5: Temporary Fixes for Common Problems

While waiting for professional help, there are some temporary fixes you can attempt to stabilize the situation. Use plumber’s tape, duct tape, or a rubber patch secured with a clamp to temporarily stop the leak. Carefully use a plunger to try and clear the clog. Avoid chemical drain cleaners as they can cause further damage. Turn off the water and power supply to the heater, and call a plumber immediately.

Step 6: Call a Professional Plumber

Some plumbing emergencies can be managed temporarily, but most require professional attention to ensure a permanent fix. Contact a licensed plumber as soon as possible, especially for serious issues like burst pipes, sewer backups, or water heater malfunctions.

Step 7: Clean Up and Prevent Future Issues

Once the immediate crisis is resolved, it’s time to focus on cleaning up and taking steps to prevent future emergencies. Use fans and dehumidifiers to dry wet areas and prevent mold growth. Check for structural damage, water stains, or mold, and address these issues promptly. Regular plumbing inspections and maintenance can help prevent unexpected emergencies. Consider having your pipes, water heater, and fixtures checked annually.

Hydro-Jetting

If you're unfamiliar with hydro-jetting, it is the process of blasting high-pressure streams of water into pipes using powerful machinery. The intense force of the jets is enough to break down all types of clogs, even grime that has been building up for years. The results should last for an extended period of time as well due to hydro-jetting's thoroughness. This method can be used on pipes made from all sorts of materials for residential and commercial properties alike. It is a good choice for routine maintenance and preventive cleaning.

Drain snaking is the more traditional alternative, which may serve as the industry standard for many plumbing companies. It is a tried-and-true method that is quick, cost-effective, and minimally invasive to your plumbing system. Drain snaking utilizes a flexible, rotating metal auger to manually break up or dislodge clogs. For minor clogs caused by hair, food particles, or other small objects, drain snaking is often the preferred option. It offers the versatility and practicality to get the job done in a variety of situations without causing any harm to the plumbing system.

Determining The Frequency of Drain Cleanings

Your drains play a critical role in removing wastewater from your home. They collect water from your bathtub, sinks, toilet, and washing machine. The water from these things is often dirty and full of contaminants and debris. Things like toilet paper, hair, grease, hair care products, and food particles are commonly put down drains in your home. While we may think that this is not a big deal, your drain line pays the price. These contaminants and debris get stuck along the walls of your drains and can cause clogs, backups, and burst pipes. Regularly cleaning your drain helps clear out any debris that lines your drain walls and ensures that wastewater can flow easily out of your home.

So, how often should you have your drains cleaned? A general rule is that you should have your drain line cleaned once a year. This will clear debris and prevent clogs from forming. However, if you have a large family or pets, you may consider cleaning your drains more often because more debris is likely to make its way through your drains and get stuck, making it more likely a clog may form. Drain cleaning can only be performed by a licensed plumbing contractor who has the tools and skills necessary to do the job right.

Why You Should Invest in a Tankless Water Heater

Traditional hot water tanks have been the standard in American homes for decades for providing hot water. However, tankless water heaters are a modern, popular alternative to traditional hot water tanks. Their explosive popularity is due to their numerous benefits. Below, we will explore these benefits to help you make an informed decision on whether you want to invest in one for your home or not.

             Energy Efficiency:

Tankless water heaters are much more energy efficient than hot water tanks. They do not store water in a tank that has to be perpetually heated to ensure that your water is always warm and ready for use. However, tankless water heaters heat the water as it travels through the system, not wasting valuable energy keeping water warm while not in use.

             Endless Hot Water Supply:

Hot water tanks have a limited supply by design. However, tankless water heaters heat the water as it travels through the system. So, they do not have limitations on how much hot water you can get at one time. You get to enjoy an endless supply of hot water when you have a tankless water heater.

            Space-Saving Design:

Tankless water heaters are compact and wall-mounted, taking up significantly less space compared to their bulky tank counterparts. This space-saving design is particularly beneficial for smaller homes, apartments, or utility rooms where space is limited. Additionally, tankless models can be installed in various locations, including closets, attics, or even outdoors.

             Longer Lifespan:

Tankless water heaters typically last 20 years or more while hot water tanks last between 10-15 years with proper maintenance. So, your investment in your hot water lasts longer and you reduce waste with a tankless water heater.

             Cost Savings:

The upfront cost of a tankless water heater is more than the traditional hot water tank. However, it lasts much longer and needs less maintenance. This combined with its better energy efficiency means that you get much more value for the extra money that you spend upfront.

             Reduced Risk of Water Damage:

Traditional tank water heaters are susceptible to leaks and ruptures, which can lead to significant water damage in your home. Tankless water heaters eliminate this risk as they do not store large amounts of water in a holding tank.

These Household Products Can Clog Your Drains

Our household drains are a critical component in keeping our homes clean and allowing us to do daily living tasks. However, it is important to remember that improperly disposing of products down the drain can lead to a host of issues such as clogs, backups, and pipe cracks. Below, we will discuss common household products that you should avoid pouring down your drain because they can compromise the health of your plumbing system.

Cooking Grease and Oil: One of the most common causes of drain clogs is cooking grease and oil. While oil and grease are hot, it is in a liquid form that seems harmless enough to pour down the drain. However, as it cools, it solidifies, creating a sticky residue that coats the inside of your pipes. This sticky residue then captures other debris that comes down your drains and forms clogs. Instead of pouring grease and oil down the drain, let it cool and solidify. Then dispose of the solidified residue in a sealed container in the trash.

Coffee Grounds: Coffee grounds are small which makes them seem like it is no big deal to wash down the drain. However, coffee grounds tend to clump up and create dense masses. These masses can clog the drain and create backups. Don’t pour coffee grounds down the drain. Wait for them to cool down and dump them in your trash instead. You can also use them for composting.

Eggshells: While eggshells are biodegradable, they can still cause problems in your drains. The thin membrane inside the shell can wrap around other debris, creating a sticky mess that can clog pipes. Throw out eggshells in the trash or use them as compost.

Medications: You should never flush medications or pour them down the drain. They are full of chemicals that can be harmful to the environment. Pharmaceuticals can contaminate water sources and harm aquatic life. Contact your local healthcare provider to learn how to properly dispose of any medications that you have.

Wet Wipes and Paper Towels: Although wet wipes claim to be “flushable”, it is best to not flush them. They can still get stuck in your drains and cause blockages. Wet wipes and paper towels do not break down like toilet paper does and can accumulate in your drains, causing clogs. Throw them out in the trash instead.

Paint and Chemicals: Paint, solvents, and other household chemicals should never be poured down the drain. These substances contain numerous toxic chemicals that can be harmful to the environment. Contact your local waste management provider to learn about how you should dispose of these things.

Hair: Hair is a common culprit for drain clogs, especially in bathroom drains. We understand that it is difficult to avoid this entirely. However, there are some ways to lessen the amount of hair that makes it into your drains. You can install a hair catcher or drain strainer to catch the hair before it makes it down the drain. You can then clean out the hair catcher into the trash.
